A-Shell/Windows is normally downloaded from the MicroSabio web site and installed on a PC like any other Windows program. If your situation is unusual or has special requirements, you will receive the software on CD or via some other means. In any case, you should end up with a more or less standard Windows installation program on your PC. To install, follow the normal Windows software installation procedure—that is, run the install program, normally by double-clicking on it. Then just follow the instructions and answer the questions.
The installation program provides the usual choices of “Typical”, “Compact”, or “Custom.” “Compact” only installs those parts needed on a workstation that is connected to a server on which A-Shell is already installed. “Typical” will install everything except for the A-Shell Telnet Server (ATS) and a few AMOS-format subroutines that are targeted at cross-platform developers. “Custom” gives you a choice of which components to install.
The installation procedure will create a program group and shortcut for launching A-Shell. The properties for this item will specify the location of the MIAME configuration file, so it is not necessary to define a MIAME environment variable. The miame.ini file will also be updated to reference the chosen location for the A-Shell pseudo-AMOS devices, but there may be other changes you wish to make to the MIAME environment.
