Well, all printing issues are strange!

Someone seems to have reinstalled some network printers at one of our customers. They still print fine from Madics (DEVICE=AUXLOC:) but they will no longer do a Print Screen print!

It looks like, with an admittedly small sample size that the printers that are not working were installed as WSD printers rather than on TCP/IP ports. There printers that are on TCP/IP ports are still printing.

I could understand that except that they are printing with AUXLOC , and the disparity seems very odd.

I'm sorry to say that my reported ability to see the future has been greatly exaggerated, and I certainly didn't see this one coming. In fact, I can't even see it (or at least understand it) now that it's here. But I do have a question...

The PrintScreen operates within ATE on the client side. So if you click the print button the print screen dialog, it will print essentially the same way A-Shell/Windows would (since ATE is really just a special case of A-Shell/Windows). And you say that doesn't work. But printing a report from the server via AUXLOC: does work. But AUXLOC: just sends the file to the PC and then prints it from there. At that point it would seem exactly like printing from the PrintScreen, except possibly to a different printer. The question is whether APEX is in the mix. If so, then it would provide a common waypoint for both print paths, and also provide a common printer selection dialog and printing environment.

That would answer the question once and for all whether the issue has anything to do with PrintScreen vs AUXLOC:, or is strictly a question of which printer/driver is being used. (I think we're both concluding the latter, but it didn't seem 100% certain from your description.)

A quick scan of the internet suggests that you/we are not the only ones sufferning from WSD-induced woes. Some examples ...
Difference between a WSD Printer Port and TCP port
wsd-seems-great-installing-printers-shouldnt-use/
wsd to the moon
wsd-printing-breaks-my-network-printer/

While I can't say that I've really tried to absorb all of that, the one thought I have for why it may appear that PrintScreen and AUXLOC: have different results to the same printer is that in one case we may have a printer init file that specifies the printer by a locally-defined name, whereas in the other case it's being identified by a network name (and the network discovery is being messed up by WSD).

The select printer dialog box pops up in both cases and the same entry is chosen from the box.

That sounds fairly convincing that it is the same printing logic, but it is still possible that you're dealing with what appears to be the same printer selection mechanism (i.e. the standard Windows printer selection dialog), but it's being invoked from different contexts. If for example the printer device is set to PROMPT:, then perhaps there could be a subtle difference between the AUXLOC: and "normal" spooler operation. But it if was APEX, then there would be absolutely no difference. (Once the file is picked for preview by APEX, then it becomes APEX's job to print it, regardless of how it got there.)

I guess the other thing you could try would be to activate the LP trace, perhaps with the XDEBUG option turned on as well, to see if we can identify any differences in the processing. In the case of PrintScreen, you can probably do that most easily via the double-right-click to bring up the debug message window and use the Properties dialog to set the traces. In the case of AUXLOC: you may need to go into the Connection Properties, Printer tab, and tick the Debug checkbox. (The reason for the difference is that under ATE/APEX, it spawns a new session for each print request so that the preview doesn't hold up operations with the server, but the newly spawned session doesn't inherit the runtime-set trace flags.)

I got the two debug traces, I am note sure I got the right thing for the AUXLOC: . They are in the next two replies.

We probably could have done without the XDEBUG trace (which is responsible for all the cstack messages). But looking past that, the first trace appears to show a normal print operation (see traces 822-849). In particular, there's no indication of a problem retrieving the handle to the printer device (829). To be clear, are you saying that everything appears to go normally from the user's perspective, except nothing comes out of the printer? Does the printer even wake up or spit out a blank page?

The AUXLOC trace didn't give us what we were looking for. Here's a simple recipe if you want to try again.

1. Settings > Connection Properties to bring up the connection properties dialog, click the Printer tab, and tick the Debug checkbox.
2. Get out to the dot prompt.
3. If necessary, create a printer init file containing DEVICE = AUXLOC: (mine was called AUXLOC.PQI)
4. PRINT AUXLOC=SYS:ERSATZ.INI

In my case, my default ATE printer is PDF-XCHANGE, but regardless the trace should look something like this...

Code
SPOOL file=C:\Users\joaqu\OneDrive\Documents\APEX\tskabm-3.prx, ptr=ATE0, switches=17825792, copies=1, form=, totpages=0

The main area of interest is just past line 15 where it displays details about the driver, printer name, and port. I guess what I'm hoping to see is that the it's different than the case you listed for APRNTSCRN. If it all looks the same, it's going to be pretty hard to figure out why one works and one doesn't.

Normally I would try to reproduce these problems here. (It's generally possible to install any printer driver and attach it to a FILE: device to test driver issues without actually having to have the hardware.) But WSD may be a special case. As far as I know, there is no virtual WSD printer driver that can be installed for testing the WSD port, and there's no way to manually add a WSD port and then use it with an existing printer. The port is only created by the plug-and-play operation on a printer that supports it. I guess in a case like this we then graciously offer to allow the customer to send us their device for testing. cool (Just out of curiosity - on the outside chance that the customer does leap at my offer, what is the actual printer model in question? The "Winptr dvr = winspool, name = \\DIPT-FP1\Derby Service Centre Laserjet, port = WSD-b7738814-5759-4awinspool" doesn't really provide much to go on.)

Hi Jack,

There are no errors, nothing happens on the printer at all (nothing goes into the queue in Windows).

Thanks, I will do the second trace again, properly this time and dig out the full model, it is some kind of Laserjet 400 series.

Yours,

Dominic

The main difference I see between the two traces is the orientation; the first one was portrait and the second landscape. So the autopitch font dimensions are different, but that's hardly an excuse for not printing at all. (I might have wondered if it was a coordinate mix up, but you indicated that nothing even goes into the print queue, so that doesn't sound likely.)

What I was hoping to see was a difference in the device driver but this line is the same in both:

Winptr dvr = winspool, name = \\DIPT-FP1\Derby Service Centre Laserjet, port = WSD-b7738814-5759-4awinspool, Passthrough = OFF

It's tempting to say that the workaround is simply to change the APRNTSCRN printer to AUXLOC:, but that won't work because AUXLOC: isn't a valid/supported option when you're already printing from the local PC. Maybe we need a new DEVICE=BOOMERANG: that the local PC can use to send the print file to the server which then sends it back via AUXLOC:? Or not.

I hate to keep throwing out tasks to keep you busy, but given that we have two apparently equivalent printing operations, one that works and one that doesn't, it's hard to resist the urge to try to find another similar printing test that might act as a tie breaker, revealing a clue in the process. The only one that comes to mind would be to use the File > Open Local Session and try some kind of printing test from the local dot prompt.

Or, as a workaround would it be viable to print to a PDF driver instead of the WSD printer (and then print from the PDF viewer)?

They have changed the printer to an TCP/IP port and now it is all working. Unfortunately that means no more testing either, so it is likely to remain a mystery. I did get confirmation it is a HP MFP m427fdn printer.

It certainly takes the pressure off. I wonder if anyone else out there has any experience with the WSD printing interface. I hate to have to buy a piece of hardware just to test a software issue, but maybe a new printer is in my future. (Unfortunately though, all indications are that the problem may not show up, except under conditions that we haven't been able to identify.)

WSD is pretty awful all round.

We have had problems printing using system calls from our other software too. I think instead of a tried and tested port based system it is very driver and client dependent.

That's my impression too, which is why I'm (not so) secretly wishing it will just go away.

Hi,

We are experiencing an issue in the field with GDI printing. I have posted here as it seems very similar (if not the same issue) as the one Dominic is describing above.

It appears that printers that are installed using a WSD port refuse to print with ATE 6.5.1688.4 or higher. 6.5.1688.2 appears to work fine. I think I have eliminated the driver being a suspect as I had a printer installed in my development environment using WSD that will not print with the newer version of ATE, but does with the older one. I installed the same printer using a TCP port under a different name, and it prints fine with the newer version of ATE.

As much as I also dislike WSD and try to avoid it in the field as much as possible, it seems like it does make the setup of multi-function printers easier (when the user cares about being able to scan to their PC.)

Here is the client-side PQI file in use:
Code
DEVICE=		PROMPT:
FORMFEED= ON ; Formfeed after print jobs
PASSTHROUGH= OFF ; Don't bypass Windows printer driver*
;(*Use PASSTHROUGH=ON to allow embedded ESC sequences; requires spool fmt=RAW)
;Following settings only apply when PASSTHROUGH=OFF
ORIENTATION=    PORTRAIT        ; PORTRAIT/LANDSCAPE
TMARGIN=        1               ; Top margin in characters
LMARGIN=        1               ; Left margin in characters
LPP=            66              ; Lines per page
CPP=            80,AUTO         ; Columns per page
FONT=           Courier New     ; Font
PITCH= AUTO ; Autosize font for LPP x CPP (or 132 if
                                ; any of 1st 10 lines longer than CPP)
WEIGHT=		700
XORIGIN=	520
YORIGIN=	250

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
John Andreasen

I'm not any smarter about WSD now than I was two months ago, but I'm starting to get the feeling that a new WSD printer may in my near future. I'm not even sure how to tell if a printer supports it though - I don't see it listed in the specs of any of the printers available at my local Office Depot (even though I suspect they probably all do these days). Any suggestions?

There was one potentially related change in 1688.3 that may be worth experimenting with backing out. It was actually a linker option to improve backwards compatibility. But without it, we had some weird display problems in certain environments, so I may need to do some digging. Give me a couple of days...

Our customer had 6 HP LaserJet Pro M118dw which combine the triple threat of cheap laser (ugh), wireless printing(arrgh) and WSD(bleeergh). I think most of them install as WSD by default if you use the manufacturer set up software.

As a test, I removed the backwards compatibility /SUBSYSTEM switch on the linker command for A-Shell. If you want to test whether that affects the WSD compatibility try this one:

ash-6.5.1697.0-w32c-upd.zip

Hi all, I went ahead and tried the 6.5.1697.0 version, and it seems that it does not resolve the issue. If it helps, the printer I am testing with here is a HP LaserJet M477fdw. The one at the customer that called is a Kyocera Taskalfa, but not sure of the model number.

On review, I think the change related to the /SUBSYSTEM switch only made it into w32c version. So if you tried it with the w32 version, it might be worth a few minutes of effort to try again with the w32c. Otherwise I guess I start printer shopping... (Sorry/thanks)

I should also note that the reason we made the switch in the first place was to restore the original dialog sizing, which mysteriously got about 20 pixels shorter and narrower after upgrading the development environment. So even if this fixes the WSD problem, it's not clear if it's a good tradeoff. But it would be interesting to know.

Glad you mentioned that as I did only try the w32 version. I have tried the C version now, but it does not resolve the issue. If you don't fell like getting a new printer, I could provide you access to my development environment where you could test.

I guess the good news is that I don't need to revisit the problem of the slight difference in dialog size when switching between the two /SUBSYSTEM variations. Still, if it really did work up until 6.5.1688.3 or 6.5.1688.4, it seems like I should be able to identify the issue. But so far I haven't.

It might be worth taking a stab and using your development environment if you want to get that set up.

It looks like I could purchase the m118dw that Dominic raves about above eek for a mere $118 on Amazon, but then I'd have to figure out what to do with the thing after (hopefully) resolving the issue. If I'm going to have to clutter up my office with a new printer (whatever happened to the paperless office anyway?), I'd rather get one that can double as a scanner. It looks like the m148dw would be the one, but it's not in stock anywhere for another month. (Dominic's comments about the perils of cheap printers notwithstanding,I don't do enough printing to justify a quality workhorse which is also going to take up a lot more office space.) There are Brother and Canon possibilities, but I've so far been unable to confirm whether they all support WSD. (Is it the case that all wireless printers support it? Or only those, like the LaserJets, that claim to be able to do it without requiring an existing wireless network?)

Obviously cheap lasers are fine for low volume but when people put them in dusty warehouses and expect them to do 200 plus prints a day it drives me nuts.

I think WSD is the fault of wireless printing but the only ones I can personally confirm often have WSD on printers that don't have wireless are HP ones, although that is the 400 series type (we normally recommend them) that John has which are bigger and more expensive.

Hi Jack, I just wanted to check on this and see if you had had gotten my email and have had time to look into the WSD printing issue yet?

Hi John - I don't see your email anywhere. But I have a printer due for delivery here on Wednesday, so since we've waited this long, we might as well wait a few more days so I use a hammer directly on the problem. I'll let you know...

Believe it or not, after how many weeks/months of fooling around with debug settings and making excuses, I finally bought myself a Brother HL-2395DW, got it setup in WSD mode, and voilĂ , it has the exact problem you are both complaining about. Unfortunately, it's Friday night and I'm too burned out to go burrowing into the bits right now, but I'm officially on the case now.

I will observe a couple of points that you may already have recognized but could be a helpful refresher:

  • The problem only seems to affect printing from the A-Shell standard printer dialog, but only in certain scenarios. The main one that I can reproduce is from the Print Screen utility, which by default is configured to prompt for the printer. Printing directly from the dot prompt (on Windows) or via AUXLOC: or via APEX all seem to work ok.
  • The fact that APEX works provides one workaround (assuming you have APEX licensed) - use the Settings > Preview Preferences to make it the default. Of course it's a bit redundant for the Print Screen utility to have a Print Preview, but it is a workaround.
  • Another workaround: edit your BAS:APRNTSCRN.CFG file and set the Printer to the name of a printer init file that specifies the printer in question in its DEVICE statement. (It also needs PASSTHROUGH=OFF). This takes away the option to select a printer, but if you always want to print to this particular WSD printer, it's a reasonable option. (Unfortunately it does require editing the CFG file, and possible creating a printer init file, so maybe not practical for end users).

Over the weekend try to drill further into it.

I'm happy to report that I think the following update fixes this WSD problem (along with a few other minor issues noted in the dev notes)...

ash65notes.txt
ash-6.5.1700.0-w32-upd.zip
ash-6.5.1700.0-w32c-upd.zip

The printing issue was actually a case of hanging on to backwards compatibility too long, or not long enough, depending on your perspective. The Windows function to create a printer device context (CreateDCW) contains a parameter (port) that was needed back in the WIN16 days, after which it was supposedly ignored. So A-Shell has been passing it all along. But apparently it wasn't entirely ignored, because when it contained a WSD port specification, it caused the function to appear to work (didn't return any errors), but the device context apparently just routed the output to the bit bucket.

So as of 6.5.1700.0, WSD printers are supported, and 16 bit Windows is officially unsupported!

No problem for us. Glad you were able to figure it out. (Hopefully without too much trouble.)
