# Named Parameters in Subroutines

XCALL subroutine parameters can be referenced by name in the same sense as [named parameters](namedparameters.htm.md) in user-defined functions, except that since XCALLs do not have formal declarations like functions do, you need to use a separate [DEFXCALL](defxcall.htm.md) directive to define the parameter names for each XCALL.
